Update 9.15.01: Olivia joined our happy family this morning just after 9AM at Stanford Hospital, and both mother and daughter are doing very well.  Like Nicholas, she complained only minimally about either the birth event or the subsequent cleaning indignities, and Liz and I are hopeful that she will be another easy baby.  So far, she's asked for little more than continuous snuggling and a feeding every couple hours, both of which we're happy to provide.

Update 9.16.01: Day 2 finds Olivia a bit more photogenic as the initial newborn puffiness wears off.  She's still eating every 2 hours, and is content and, at times, alert in between feedings.  Being biologically 6 weeks older than Nicholas was when he was born, she is considerably more advanced with both motor and visual skills; in particular, she has a charming habit of looking at us when we talk to her.

Update 9.18.01: Olivia has settled into the usual feed - charm - sleep - repeat cycle which has worked well for newborns throughout the ages.  We've been again struck by how similar she is to Nicholas in both personality and facial appearance.  Given how Nicholas has turned out so far, this is a good thing.

Update 9.19.01: Everyone's home!  Liz checked out of the hospital today on schedule, and the whole family is back at Chez Treynor.  Olivia is continuing to fill out in that rapid newborn style, and Nick has accepted her presence in his domain without complaint.

Update 9.24.01: Olivia's adapted well to home life, and she and mom have gotten to spend a good deal of quality time together.  I've gotten back into my daily "I survive on Peet's coffee" routine which I remember (ahem) fondly from Nick's infancy.  Olivia's getting cuter as she loses her newborn puffiness, and the pictures reflect it.

Update 10.5.01: Our littlest one is one a growth kick, over 7.5 lbs and eating every couple hours during the day.  She's starting to sleep more at night, which (yawn) is a relief to her parents and brother.  If she follows Nick's pattern, she'll sleep through the night when she hits 11 lbs.  In the meantime, we're on the lookout for some photo opportunity locations, as these interior shots are becoming repetitive...

Update 10.15.01: It's the one month mark, and she's still just as hungry.  Over 8 lbs and definitely filling out, Olivia is starting to sleep several hours in a row, to the delight of her catatonic parents.  She's also started smiling at us, which is delightful (though hard to capture on film right now).  We've gotten tons of cute outfits from our friends & family, and a few of them are demo'd in tonight's pictures...

Update 11.25.01: At 10 weeks, Olivia looks like a whole different person.  She crossed the 10-lb mark around November 2nd, and is probably close to 12 lbs by now.  She frequently sleeps 4-5 hours at night, much to the relief of her parents.  However, she's still higher-maintenance than Nick was at this age, prone to eating "snacks" every hour and then complaining soon after.  We're hoping she settles down in another couple months, especially after Peet's Coffee named us "household of the month" for October :)

Update 12.30.01: Now 3.5 months old, Olivia's growing quickly and developing skills as she goes. She began reaching out and grasping things around 12/15, and is just now learning how to put them into her mouth. She's been sleeping through the night for the past couple weeks, which we hope is a permanent change. She's also definitely got a little personality -- she likes to be held when she's awake, and will complain bitterly if put down or left unattended for any length of time.

Update 2.19.02: Just past the 5 month mark, and Olivia's continuing her rapid transformation from infant to toddler. She's hit a number of milestones since the last update: she has been sleeping through the night reliably since Christmas, she started laughing in early January, demonstrated separation anxiety in late January, rolled over on Feb 2nd, and ate her first solid food on Feb 4th. She tolerates being put on her tummy (briefly) and will pick up her head and look around. She has occasional nonsense conversations with her adoring parents, and plays happily with her brother. She's also remained very photogenic, which explains the number of pictures gracing her January and February galleries.

Update 3.10.02: Olivia's latest behaviors is a combination singing/squawking which may be a precursor to babbling. She's continuing to be a delight and to enjoy the attention of her parents and brother. This month's photo shoot was at the Mountain View kite festival.

Update 4.23.02: Olivia has continued to sing, and has added raspberries and occasional syllables to her repitoire. She has learned to sit on her own (3/02) and crawl (4/02) as well as to stand while holding something with both hands (4/02).

Update 6.9.02: Six weeks is a long time when you're in Olivia's stage of growth! She's been babbling for some time now, and is beginning to associate syllables with people (dada, mama, baba ("brother")) although it's still inconsistent. She loves to play games, like hide 'n seek, Peek-a-boo, and clapping. She now crawls at a high rate of speed, pulls herself up to a stand, and climbs stairs, but has shown only a passing interest in cruising to date. She has also discovered that opening doors/cabinets/boxes often reveals interesting contents, which has led to an additional round of childproofing. Finally, to the delight of the house photographer, she's got two front teeth.

Update 9.11.02: Almost a year old now, Olivia can stand on her own but is not yet walking, has a number of words (hi, mom, dad, bottle, dog) but rarely strings them together, cruises and climbs and crawls at high rates of speed, and has a devilish sense of humor which reminds of her father. She has two top teeth to match her bottom two, and loves eating sold foods which she sees adults eating. We expect her to walk any day now, and there will of course be video; until then, enjoy the pictures.

Update 11.24.02: Olivia took her first steps on her first birthday, and switched to walking as her primary means of transport by 13 months. She has had multisyllabic words since 12 months, while month 14 has brought a new round of teeth (up to 11 now, including molars) and uses them to good effect on all varieties of food. She loves playing games, whether they be Hide & Seek or legos with her older brother. She also gravitates toward anything mobile -- bicycles, trikes, motorcycles, cars -- and will grab the steering wheel of her parents' cars and twist it back and forth while making engine revving noises :) We suspect a certain genetic predisposition toward her father's side of the family in this regard.

Update 3.7.03: It's been over three months since the last update, and little Olivia has grown by leaps and bounds. Though light, she is now as tall as most 2-year-olds. Along with her additional height, her face has matured and she now looks more like a small child than a baby. All her teeth have come in, and she chatters up a storm, albeit in a language other than "grown up" :) Her vocabulary includes many words, including her favorites: "happy", "baby", "daddy", "mommy", "wawa (water)", "doggy", "no", "please", "more", and others. She associates spoken words with events - we say "do you want milk?" and she laughs and nods her head if she's thirsty and shakes it if she is not. She also has begun to request things by name, such as "wawa, wawa" when she wants a drink of water. Finally, though she doesn't speak much, she clearly understands a good deal of what is said; "wake up mommy and give her a kiss" results in Olivia climbing upstairs, going into Liz's room, climbing the bed, and giving her mother a good-morning kiss. She's got quite a little mind and is hard to fool; she also has quite a little temper when she's unhappy with our level of responsiveness to her demands. We'll see if this is the beginning of the "terrible twos" for our precocious daughter.

Update 6.9.03: Now almost 21 months, Olivia is in a wonderful stage of rapid verbal development. She has an extensive vocabulary -- everything from "moon" to "milk", "jump" to "juice" -- knows many animal sounds by rote ("Olivia, what sound does a duck make?" "quack, quack"), and she has started to use short sentences ("I don't know", "She's over there") as well as much longer sentences involving words not quite yet in the O.E.D. She continues to be a maniac, running around and climbing constantly, eating heartily, exploring, sleeping only 10 hours a day (including nap!), and generally behaving much like her father did at her age.

Update 10.22.03: Now a month past her second birthday, Olivia is every bit a 2-year-old, and an opinionated one at that! She speaks in full sentences, can count to 10, and can recite a somewhat mangled version of the alphabet. She continues to be a light sleeper and a very active child, climbing things (like kitchen counters) which her hapless parents would have previously though were proof against the best efforts of one so young. Physically Olivia is tall and lean for her age, and she reminds me a good bit of my sister Aria, who is now 5'10" and runs marathons for fun...

Update 12.14.03: Olivia continues to, well, GROW. She's nearly as tall as her brother, and measured in at 75th percentile for height. She's fast and extremely verbal. Her latest sentence: "Nick, don't poke me in the tummy with a stick. It's dangerous." She's also definitely still two - when tired, she does have a tendency toward tantrums, and she has scant patience for being denied her desires. In general however she is a delight, playing with her brother or on the computer, having conversations with her parents, and generally running amok.

Update 3.14.04: While still tall, Olivia has not grown hugely in the past three months. Her verbal abilities continue apace, with long multi-object sentences the norm. She is very inquisitive and loves to explore, play with her parents and her brother, and generally whoop it up. Olivia remains a light sleeper and a daredevil; her latest pictures from our vacation to Mexico show a few of her more intrepid moments.

Update 7.10.04: Olivia has had another growth spurt, as has her brother, and she's nearly too tall for 4-year-old clothing although she has yet to turn 3. She measures 37.5" and 29.2 lbs, and remains every bit the monkey in her energy and urge to climb. Her vocabulary is extensive, and we regularly have long conversations about topics of interest to young girls. She is at times delightful and insufferable, like many bright 2-year-olds, and she has a very sweet empathic streak which I recognize from her parents' childhood.

Update 8.27.05: Olivia has continued on a growth path which will put her around 5'8" - somewhere between my sisters Aria and Maia. Her face looks very much like her father's at her age, but we can hope this is merely a stage she will grow out of. She continues to be precocious in both speech and athletic ability, and Liz and I expect she will be quite a handful in her early teens. She has an extensive vocabulary, can count and recognize all letters and numbers, and is seeming-irrevocably attached to dolls, babies, and everything cute. She remains a delight for her parents 90% of the time, and a ... challenge the other 10%.

Update 5.28.06: Olivia approaches her 5th birthday much as she did approaching her 4th -- tall, lean, energetic, intelligent, and with a firm opinion on nearly everything. Her new pixie haircut suits her very well, as the pictures indicate. Her interests continue to focus on dolls, dress-ups, friends and role playing, but she has also been bitten by the computer bug and enjoys playing age-appropriate games like "Putt Putt" and "Pajama Sam". Because she and Nicholas do so much together these days, I've combined their picture gallery for this installment.
